Ekel Signs Two State Finishers

Nick Ekel, head coach for Southwestern Community College track and field, announced two incoming student-athletes who he believes will make an immediate impact on the program.  Ronald Henderson, Jr. from Akron, OH, and Anthony Gonzales from Brownsville, TX, both signed national letters of intent last week for Southwestern's track and field program.

Ronald Henderson, Jr. - A 2016 graduate of Butchtel High School in Akron, OH, Henderson finished as the runner-up in the high jump at the Ohio Division II State Championship this past month when he cleared 6-9.  Henderson was selected to compete in the high jump at the prestigious Midwest Meet of Champions for Team Ohio.  Ekel said Henderson will compete in sprint events for the Spartans as well.

"Ronald is a big-time talent who will have an immediate impact at the region and national level in the high jump," Ekel explained.  "He brings a competitive spirit to our team, and will be a joy to coach."

Anthony Gonzales - A 2016 graduate of Gladys-Porter High School in Brownsville, TX, Gonzales finished eighth in the 400-meter at the 5A Texas High School State Championship with a time of 49.51.  Gonzales has personal bests of 22.51 in the 200-meter, 49.18 in the 400-meter, and a long jump best of 21-9.

"Anthony was able to place in the 400-meter dash in what might be the most competitive state track and field championship in America," Ekel stated.  "His experience in big-time competitive environments will prove invaluable to our program as we continue to build."
