Spartans Show Team Improvement at 2017 Regionals

On Saturday and Sunday, May 6 and 7, the Southwestern Spartans traveled to the 2017 regional track meet hosted by Iowa Western Community College in Council Bluffs. The Spartans put everything on the line to finish the season with a remarkable performance.

The women had nine top-eight finishes from just four athletes, including an all-region (top-three) performance from Sisilia Seavula in the 100-meter dash. Seavula finished in third place with a time of 12.21 seconds, one of her best times of the season.

The men had 15 top-eight finishes including a regional champion performance from Ronald Henderson, winning the high jump with a mark of 2.09 meters. Various new personal bests and school records were made as well, including a memorable overall performance from Australian native and freshman Jeremy Newton, who achieved new personal bests in the javelin throw, long jump, and triple jump while breaking the school record in the triple jump with a mark of 12.60 meters. Along with his first place finish in the high jump, Henderson set a new school record in the long jump with a jump of 6.51 meters. Other personal bests included Andrew Conover in the 200-meter dash, running 23.16 seconds; Anthony Klocke in the 400-meter hurdles, running 57.22 seconds; and Dylan Lucas in the high jump, achieving a personal best height of 1.88 meters.

For team scores, the men finished fourth of five teams beating North Iowa Area Community College with 57 points, and finishing just five points behind Indian Hills Community College. The women finished third of five teams, scoring 36 points, outperforming North Iowa Area Community College and Indian Hills Community College.

Following the regional meet, the Spartans still have Henderson and Seavula representing SWCC at the NJCAA National Championships in Hutchinson, KS, on May 19 and 20.
