Spartan Men Make Program History at Cornell Invitational

On Saturday, Jan. 20, 2018, the Southwestern Spartans traveled to the 2018 Cornell Invitational hosted by Cornell College in Mt. Vernon. The Spartans had an exciting start to the season with a number of impressive performances, topped off by a team win on the men's side. The men scored a total of 104 points, outperforming Cornell College, Coe College, Clarke University, and Graceland University. The women also competed well, scoring 16 team points.

"As a team, we are encouraged by our performances at this first competition," commented Spartan Head Coach Jordan Strofaci. "It is exciting because we still have a lot of work to get done, and a lot of progress to be made."

Next week, the Spartans will travel to Buena Vista University to compete in the 2018 Dennis Young Classic.

Notable Performances - Men

Ronald Henderson, sophomore

  • Finished first in the high jump with a mark of 2.10 meters (6 feet 10 3/4 inches). With this mark, Henderson qualifies for the national competition and is currently ranked second in the country in the NJCAA
  • Finished first in the long jump with a mark of 6.53 meters (21 feet 5 inches)

Demetrius Coleman, sophomore

  • Finished sixth in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.42
  • Finished seventh in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.08
  • Finished eighth in the long jump with a mark of 5.41 meters (17 feet 9 inches)

Jeremy Newton, sophomore

  • Finished third in the long jump with a mark of 5.92 meters (19 feet 5 inches)
  • Finished third in the triple jump with a mark of 11.96 meters (39 feet 3 inches)

Chris Krystofiak, sophomore

  • Finished first in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.44
  • Finished fourth in the high jump with a mark of 1.75 meters (5 feet 8 3/4 inches)
  • Finished sixth in the long jump with a mark of 5.69 meters (18 feet 8 inches)

Albert Miller, freshman

  • Finished fifth in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.41
  • Finished third in the 200-meter dash with a time of  24.36

Dylan Lucas, sophomore

  • Finished third in the 400-meter dash with a time of 54.72
  • Finished second in the high jump with a mark of 1.85 meters (6 feet 3/4 inches)

Kevin Dietrich, sophomore

  • Finished second in the 3000-meter run with a time of 9:53.46

Eric Portis, freshman

  • Finished second in the 400-meter dash with a time of 54.65

  • Finished seventh in the one-mile run with a time of 5:57.96

Kirsten Schirm, freshman

  • Finished sixth in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 11.22
