Spartans Top William Penn at Home

SWCC WBB vs William Penn JV

The Spartans came out on top with a victory of 82-68 over William Penn JV, on Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2017, to improve to 3-1 on the season. This is the best start of the season the Spartans have had since Head Coach Addae Houston has been leading the women's basketball program.

November 14 has been good to the Spartans during Houston's reign. Ironically, four years ago on Nov. 14, 2013, the Spartans defeated Grand View JV to end a 37-game losing streak, which began near the close of the 2011-12 season. In 2013, Houston was in his first season with the Spartans and Assistant Coach Morgan Knorr was in her sophomore season as a player.

Houston said during this Nov. 14's victory, his Spartans' tough defense was key.

"I was very impressed with our defensive effort, especially when Penn made runs to pull the game closer," Houston stated. "We held together to get stops we needed at critical moments in the game."

In three out of the four games this season, the Spartans have had several players hit double digits in scoring. This game was no exception. T'Keyah Stapleton, sophomore of Omaha, NE, and Tina Lair-Van Meter, freshman of Coon Rapids, both led the team with 17 points, and Lair-Van Meter pulled down nine rebounds and five steals; T'Keyah Stapleton, sophomore of Omaha, NE, added six assists and five steals;  Fallyn Beemer, sophomore of Bedford, contributed 14 points; and Jasmine Aviles, freshman of Crawfordville, FL, added 12 points.

Up next for the Spartans is another home match-up on Thursday, Nov. 16, 2017, vs. Grand View University, with a 6 p.m. tip-off.
