Spartans Finish with Second Win vs Simpson

SWCC WBB vs Simpson JV

Following a short three-day turn-around from their last battle, the Spartans hosted Simpson JV, facing them for the second and final time this season.

Fallyn Beemer, who had been out three days earlier due to injury, was able to return to the lineup for this match-up.

The game had a similar start to the earlier contest in Indianola, as both teams had no answer defensively, but Simpson held a narrow lead, 21-20, at the end of the first quarter.

At the half, the Spartans were down 32-42 following a sluggish second quarter.

Spartan Head Coach Addae Houston felt sluggish defense was key in the deficit.

"We have to be more consistent on defense when shots are not falling for us on offense," Houston said. "Sometimes that happens, and when it does, we need to be able to rely on our defense to make plays."

During the second half, the Spartans sparked a run with their full-court pressure on defense.

Late in the fourth quarter, both teams struggled to maintain a lead, and a late score from Simpson at the end of regulation tied the game 66-66 to move into overtime.

Similar to their first meeting, Simpson trailed 71-70 and would have the ball late in the game with just seconds remaining in overtime. The Spartan defense would again hold strong on the final possession, as Simpson failed to get a shot attempt and time expired with the Spartans winning 71-70.

Four Spartans reached double-digit scoring in the game. Fallyn Beemer scored 16 points; T'Keyah Stapleton added 15 points; and Jasmine Aviles and Vanessa Romo each contributed 12 points.
