Spartans Battle Southeastern Blackhawks

The Southwestern Spartans fought hard against the Southeastern Blackhawks on their home court on Wednesday, Jan. 31, but ultimately fell short, with a final score of 49-58.

Southeastern began the game with an 8-2 run. The Spartans quickly closed the gap and trailed by one 12-13 at the end of the first quarter.

According to Spartan Head Coach Addae Houston, the first half was a series of runs by both teams; however, neither team could stretch the lead out too far.

The Spartans trailed by three at halftime, 24-27.

"This has been a tough year all around with injuries and a depleted roster," said Houston. "I give tremendous credit to the eight young ladies playing, because through it all they continue to battle each and every night."

Second half play was very similar and at the close of the third quarter the Spartans trailed 36-38.

Southeastern's deep shooting kept the Spartans out of reach throughout the game. The Blackhawks connected on 10 made three-pointers.

For the Spartans, Vanessa Romo scored a game-high 12 points. She had three rebounds and two assists as well. Jasmine Aviles added 11 points. T'Keyah Stapleton had nine points, seven rebounds, and three assists. Chesley Trautloff added eight points and two steals off the bench.

Houston remains proud of the effort he's seeing out of his players.

"Although we dropped another game, there were still some positives to take away from the game," noted Houston. "I noticed better execution on certain offensive and defensive possessions that we worked to improve in practice, so if we continue to focus on the details we will secure a win soon."

The Spartans will host North Iowa Area Community College on Saturday, Feb 3, at 1 p.m.
