Sauvakacolo Garners All-American

Sauvakacolo Garners All-American

Everybody knew she was something special, and Sophomore, Fane Sauvakacolo proved exactly that. At the NJCAA Indoor Track & Field National Championships, Sauvakacolo earned All-American status, a feat pursued by all, but obtained by few.

At the championship event, Sauvakacolo posted personal records in multiple events to score her more points, the 60-meter hurdles (9.81s), the shot put (7.95 meters), and the 800 (2:44.0).

To say director of track and field and cross country, Scott Vicker, was thrilled is an understatement: "I can't even begin to describe how happy I am for Fane. She gave it everything she had in all five events today. To start the day with a half second PR in the 60 meter hurdles was a great start. She put herself in position to be an All-American with that performance, and even though she dropped a spot in the standings after the high jump, she kept battling. We knew with the final two events being two of her best events in the pentathlon, we could make up some points there. The long jump didn't go as well as she would have liked, but it was good enough to get her where she needed to be going into the 800. The big thing we stressed coming into this weekend was that she couldn't panic if all the other girls went out fast. She needed to just run her own race in the 800 and hit her splits. She was at the back of the pack early, but ran her race and moved up throughout the race. We talked beforehand and she knew when she got to the last 200 it was time to give it everything she had. She did exactly that and moved all the way up to fourth place in the 800. I could tell when she was done she had given it everything she had. For her to earn All-America honors in an event that she had never even attempted coming into the season is a testament to how much she bought into her potential and how hard she worked at all these new events."
