Creston native Brianna Maitlen is headed home to take over at the helm of Southwestern Community College’s volleyball program beginning with the team’s fall 2024 season.
Last fall, Murray High School senior Jayda Chew signed a National Letter of Intent to play softball for the Spartans at Southwestern Community College beginning fall 2023. Early this week, Chew added volleyball to her slate for the 2023-24 academic year.
The Iowa Community College Athletic Conference announced the Academic All-Region performers for the Fall of 2022. First Team performers received a 3.5 grade point average or above, while Second Team members earned between a 3.0 and a 3.49 GPA. A student's highest GPA was recognized, either their cumulative GPA or their fall semester only GPA. Nearly 1,300 student-athletes reached First-Team recognition and just under 800 earned Second Team status.
Taylor Shipley of Creston, who served as interim head coach for the Spartan volleyball program from mid-October through the end of the 2022 volleyball season, will continue with the program as the Spartans’ head volleyball coach.
Following two summer resignations in late-June, the Southwestern Community College athletic department has been on the hunt to fill volleyball coaching positions in time for the start of the fall semester.
