Spartan Baseball Spring Break Update

2024-25 Spartan Baseball Team

With the 2024-25 well underway, the Southwestern Spartans baseball team continues to push forward despite a challenging start. Holding a 3-12 overall record, the Spartans are working to build momentum as they prepare for the heart of conference play.

Offensive Production

Offensively, the Spartans have showcased their ability to get on base, posting a team batting average of .268 and an on-base percentage of .397. The lineup has produced 71 runs across 15 games, with 108 hits, including 17 doubles, four triples, and two home runs. The team's ability to draw walks—71 so far—has been a bright spot, allowing for consistent baserunners in key situations. Additionally, the Spartans have been active on the basepaths, recording 19 stolen bases while only being caught four times.

Pitching Struggles and Areas for Improvement

On the mound, the Spartans have faced challenges, with a team earned run average (ERA) of 8.85 and opponents batting .374 against them. The pitching staff has struggled with command at times, reflected in a WHIP of 2.11. With conference games approaching, improving consistency on the mound will be a key focus for the coaching staff.

Recent Performance and Key Moments

After a tough stretch that included multiple close losses, the Spartans found success against Highland Community College (Kansas) with a pair of strong wins (10-6, 10-2) on March 1. These victories showcased the team's potential when both the offense and pitching staff are in sync.

However, the Spartans have also suffered several narrow defeats, including a one-run loss to Highland (7-6) and a competitive 4-3 loss against Coffeyville. These tight games highlight the team's ability to compete but also emphasize the importance of execution in late-game situations.

Looking Ahead

The Spartans now shift their attention to upcoming matchups, including a series against East Central College and Iowa Western Community College. With conference play still ahead, there are opportunities for the team to turn the season around and make a push in the ICCAC standings. Head Coach Chris Piperno and his staff will look to refine pitching strategies and capitalize on the team's offensive strengths as the season progresses.

Despite the early struggles, the Spartans remain focused on growth and development, knowing that their best baseball is still ahead. Fans can follow all the action live on the ICCAC Sports Network as the Spartans continue their journey through the 2024-25 season.
