Thomas POW, Spartans Unofficial Champions

Brodric Thomas played a key part in three Southwestern wins over North Central Missouri College, Southeast CC (NE), and Central CC (NE) and his efforts earned him ICCAC Player of the Week accolades.  Over the three games, Thomas averaged 15.3 points and had his best game with 19 points and eight rebounds against Central (NE).

"Brodric had a great week," said Spartan Head Coach Todd Lorensen.  "He struggled with foul trouble a lot early in the season so it was nice to see him get more minutes and perform well."

Thomas backed up his award by stuffing the stat sheet in an 84-64 win over NJCAA Division II 19th-ranked Macomb Community College out of Michigan at the Rock Valley Classic.  He had 19 points, nine rebounds, four assists, and three steals.  Four others were in double figures: KeShawn Wilson (17), Bennie Curtis (11), Jordan Johnson (10), and Jamil Maddred (10).  Lavon Hightower added seven points and a game-high 11 rebounds.

"We were extremely balanced on offense," commented Lorensen.  "As a team we were solid on the defensive end as well, which was encouraging to see."

On Saturday, Southwestern defeated NJCAA Division I Kankakee Community College 78-64.  Later, Macomb defeated NJCAA DIII Rock Valley College (ranked #1 in NJCAA DIII) by 17 making the Spartans the unofficial champions of the Rock Valley Classic.  Johnson paced another balanced attack with 15 points, Thomas added 12, while Maddred and Wilson had 10 each.  Calvin Chambers and Hightower both had eight points.

"We weren't as solid on either end of the floor but we still did some good things," said Lorensen. "The last 14 minutes of the game we really locked in and finished the game the right way,"

Southwestern is ranked #11 in the country and holds a record of 8-0.  They are back in action this weekend at the Indian Hills Classic where they play Richard Daley (NJCAA D1) at 5 p.m. on Friday and have a rematch with Kankakee CC on Saturday at 5 p.m.
